Why colour matters more for bourbon

Bourbon has to age in new charred oak, and that is where almost all of its colour comes from. A young bourbon runs pale gold; a well-aged one goes deep copper. The person you are buying for reads a pour before they smell it, whether or not they would tell you so.

That gives you a real decision to make. A clear cut glass hands the colour back to you unchanged and lets the cutting break it into pieces.
