Why crystal marks the fifteenth year
The anniversary lists most people half-remember come from a Victorian custom that the American National Retail Jeweler Association formalised in 1937. Early years get soft, disposable materials — paper, cotton, leather. Later years get harder and rarer ones. Fifteen is where crystal lands.
The logic is not subtle, and it does not need to be. Fifteen years in, you have something clear and strong that took heat and pressure to form, and that will chip if you are careless with it. As symbols go, it earns its place.
What matters practically: crystal is one of the few anniversary materials you can actually buy something usable in. Paper year is hard. Tin year is harder. Crystal year, you can put a real object on the table.
Traditional or modern — crystal either way
Some anniversaries split. The traditional list says one thing, the modern list says another, and you end up choosing a camp. The fifteenth does not do this: both lists say crystal. Watches appear on some modern variants as a secondary option, but crystal is the answer you can give without hedging.
That removes the usual anxiety about getting the year wrong. If you are buying for a couple who care about the tradition, crystal reads as correct. If they do not care about the tradition, it still reads as a good glass.
The case for a pair

There is no live preview and no proof — the artisan chooses the placement by reading the text against the cut pattern on that specific piece, because a name that sits cleanly on an open panel would fight a dense field of cuts. A date reads better than a sentence — the surface is faceted, not flat, and short text sits best on it. A first name works just as well. For two names on two glasses, order two Edo Kiriko pieces and say in the order notes which name goes on which.
