A gift for the host, or a gift for the home
These are two different purchases and most people conflate them. A gift for the host is wine, flowers, something consumed that evening — good manners, and gone by Sunday. A gift for the home is an object the household keeps and uses, which is what you want when the occasion is someone actually moving in rather than throwing a party.
That distinction has a practical consequence for you. Buying for the home means buying for at least two people and for a room, so a single item that only one of them can use is a miss. - A family name — The Harpers, or simply Harper. The best use of a single engraved glass in a household context: it belongs to the home rather than to one person, and it stays correct however the household changes shape.
- Two first names — take two Edo Kiriko glasses, or the four-glass set, and say in the order notes which name goes on which.
- A move-in date — quieter than a name, and it turns the object into a small record of the year they arrived.
Avoid engraving the address. It dates the gift the moment they move again, and a first home is rarely a last one.
